The NFHS rules also include the following situation that might also apply:

The wording in the rule on warding off is pretty broad. Here is what is says in the NFHS rules:

Again, warding in such a situation is not common but I do think it is covered under the rule as written and not a bad way for an official to send a message/set the tone without resorting to a time serving penalty.

Anyway, we were in a tournament a few weeks ago, and because he's so much stronger than most of the other kids, his most consistent move is a bull dodge. Nike Hyperdunk Youth Basketball Shoes

I always thought you had to use your free hand to ward, and that if you have two hands on the stick, it's not possible to ward.

Could I get some clarification on this call, please?

But again, what you describe, certainly sounds like a mack truck running down people without the benefit of tooting a horn. You or he should talk to some experienced "Big Men" who know how to use their strength to their advantage without causing illegal disadvantage to their opponents. You'll both discover a new skill set.

The dipping of the shoulder constitutes the ward. It's a primary action of the player in possession making overt, physical contact with the defender, which is illegal by rule. That said were he to run at, and thenmake an attempot to dodge the defender while staying upright. and there was some contact, he'd have a better chance of NOT drawing the call. Also if the defender is right in his grille and there's body to body contact that he drives through without "dipping", he should allowed to advance without penalty. Equal Hypervenom Cleats

While not a call that is common, I do always point out that warding can be done with any body part. When reading the actual rule, I think the action you describe fits under the rule your player was in possession of the ball and used a part of his body to direct the movement of the player attempting to check him.

If I'm interpreting the rule incorrectly, I don't want to teach the kid the wrong thing. :)

A1 with possession of the ball advances toward stationary defender B1 and with a bull dodge runs over B1.

calling this a "ward." To me, this would be more like calling Nike Hyperlive Black a charge in basketball than a ward. He's not pushing the stick away, he's just running through the check.

A player in possession of the ball shall not use his free hand or arm or any other part of his body to hold, push or control the direction of the movement of the crosse or body of the player applying the check. A player in possession of the ball may protect his crosse with his hand, arm or other part of his body when his opponent makes a play to check his crosse.

I coach in a youth league and one of the kids on my team is a pretty tough kid. Both his older brothers play lacrosse as well as football, so we have to consistently get him to stop trying to take body checks, etc. because they're not legal at this level.

RULING: Unnecessary roughness if A1's actions were deliberate and excessively violent.

The official might have seen your players bull dodge as a problem but not quite enough to warrant Unnecessary Roughness which is clearly an option when a player with the ball runs over a defender.

Equal pressure doesn't necessarily have to be "equal" if one player's stronger than the other. We don't penalize faster players for being quick agile. We certainly shouldn't penalize bigger players for being stronger.
