"We do things today that we never dreamed of 10 years ago, in part because of the medical school and in part because we have a very high quality building with all the latest technology in it."
Mrs Acred said: "There are some very obvious advantages to being in a new building, such as it's easier to clean because there are no cracked bits and bent bits.
She said: "I'm a great believer that by working with other organisations we can produce something that is greater than the sum of its parts."
Derby City General Hospital
The trust is hoping to build a hotel, shops, restaurants, offices and housing on the 20 acres freed up by the move.
It has taken more than a decade of work but now Derby's new superhospital is only months away from opening. All major services will move from Derbyshire Royal Infirmary to the site at Derby City General Hospital in May. This form of treatment was introduced by orthopaedic consultant Rohan Rajan in January 2006 and replaces other methods, such as leg braces or splints.
It is pioneering a treatment, known as thrombolysis, which involves injecting a drug that breaks down blood clots in the brain before they can cause long term damage.
She said: "If Derby is seen as a vibrant, growing economy with good sport and entertainment facilities then we attract good people to work here.
"Obviously there are some specialist services, such as neurosciences, which we won't offer but we now have the capability to look at what we do and what we could do."

IT is the newest and most modern hospital in the country but, if Derby's latest development is to remain the best, health bosses will need to stay on their toes.
As part of the scheme, the hospitals have made a number of pledges. These include offering students work experience and placements, raising money for local charities and holding a sponsored swim led by Mrs Acred.

But remaining on the site will be the NHS walk in centre and some day hospital services, including rehabilitation, key outpatient services, and the existing mental health wards.

Mrs Acred said: "Since that time, we have attracted some nationally and internationally renowned clinicians.
The trust is taking part in Derby City Partnership's Be Inspiring campaign, which aims to make the city a better place to live between now and 2012.
Benefits of the new building which will help it to succeed in its aims include a helicopter landing pad on the roof, which will allow critically ill patients to be flown in by air ambulance and taken downstairs to the accident and emergency department in a matter of minutes.
The trust has already taken a big step forward in this area, thanks to the opening of the medical school at the new hospital site in 2003.
Acred said another mark of the hospital's future success would be its role within the wider community.
